About William O. Keith

Artist is my Fulltime Avocation

I am from Birmingham, Alabama. I made the decision to go to Art School after I was thirty. I explored many media throughout my journey in higher education and developed techniques and fundamentals through exploration of Advanced Drawing, Advanced Bronze Casting and Advanced Lithography as well as my endeavor into Advanced Ceramic Sculpture. The 12 year venture into formal art education was rewarding yet challenging and expensive. It was a smart decision. Only after completing my studies which included Studio Internships and Independent Studies, did I discover that my favorite media, watercolor and fabric tapestry, were indeed the two areas or media which I wanted to continue to pursue. These two media are not taught in Art School. Perhaps because they are considered the most difficult? They are the two media that I spent over 20 years exploring on my own before choosing to seek my degree in Art.

Experience began at an early age

I began drawing and painting and using Pastels when I was five years old. My maternal Grandmother, Rebecca Fraser was a profound influence upon me. She would reward me at Christmas and on Birthdays with new sets of pastels and when I would visit her and my grandfather I was always curious to see what she was painting and I admired my grandfathers Love of Wildlife and Botanicals. I always would search the rooms of their house to see the latest of my grandmothers landscapes.

My artistic vision was developed by the tutalige of my mother and father

My mother designed and created new clothing for our clothing store. She also made clothing for me and my siblings. My father was in the business to keep his clothing store stocked with Western Wear and Square Dance Clothing and apparel. He had an inate knowledge of Fabrics and Mama had a keen and brilliant sense of design. They  encouraged my creative awareness.  Art became a ritual in my life. I have works in many private collections and Regional Galleries.
